Super/Food – Broccoli

broccoli_mini

Does anybody know the saying: Chocolate is God’s excuse for broccoli?Well, I love chocolate in every imaginable way (hot cocoa, cake, cookies, plain old chocolate bars), but I really like broccoli as well. I remember, one holiday with my parents a few years ago we were on a real broccoli kick. We’d eat some freshly steamed broccoli, with mini jacket potatoes and some relish almost every evening. Every time I eat it now, I think back to that holiday (green tea with mint was also high on the list that year, so I guess we were on a healthy kick, not just a broccoli kick…anyway, I’m running off the topic). Broccoli is not only a great holiday memory for me and just as tasty as chocolate, it’s also really healthy! Read why:

You probably know that no food can heal cancer. There are some foods though, that help prevent it and broccoli is one of them. Especially glucosinolates prevent that harmful substances from our food or our environment can damage our cells (which would cause cancer). At the same time, broccoli activates the degradation of harmful substances in your body.

Broccoli doesn’t only help if you want to prevent cancer, there’s so much more in the small green ‘trees’ (as my brother calls it). One portion of broccoli covers twice your daily need of vitamin C. This way it strengthens your body’s defences and also helps your skin. If you eat enough, you will notice it being more soft and delicate. Broccoli is also full of calcium, which is surprising for a vegetable. One portion contains just as much as one glass of milk making it especially important for vegans and people who are lactose-intolerant.

Come back tomorrow for a really tasty recipe by another amazing new contributor.

PS: See those great pictures? They are by Danielle Marshall, one of my oldest blogging pals. She will be contributing pictures for super/food from now on and I hope to see a lot more of her on here in the future! Head on over to her lovely blog!
